Trip Overview
This two-day route is designed for travelers who want to experience the heart of the Inca Trail in a shorter and more accessible format. Although it skips the longer portions of the classic trek, it still includes the most celebrated sections of the ancient path.
During the hike you’ll explore Wiñay Wayna, a remarkable complex of terraces and ritual spaces built on steep mountainsides, and you’ll enter Machu Picchu through Inti Punku, the Sun Gate—an approach used by Inca travelers to reach the citadel. The journey concludes with a guided exploration of Machu Picchu, one of the greatest archaeological sites of the Andes.

Your Day-by-Day Adventure
You will be collected from your accommodation in Cusco early in the morning. Depending on your assigned train time, the transfer will take you to the station from which the rail journey begins. The train follows the Sacred Valley until reaching Km 104, where your trekking experience officially starts.
The first stretch climbs gradually through dense mountain vegetation until reaching Wiñay Wayna (2,680 m / 8,792 ft). Built along dramatic slopes above the Urubamba River, this site features long agricultural terraces, stone stairways and ceremonial areas that reflect advanced Inca planning and adaptation to the landscape.
After a visit of the ruins, the route continues for roughly one and a half hours along original Inca pathways. The trail then leads to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, from which Machu Picchu appears for the first time. For many travelers, this viewpoint becomes the symbolic moment in which the entire trek comes together.
From the Sun Gate, a gentle descent of about an hour brings you toward the upper terraces of the citadel area. You will then take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes, check into your hotel, and later share dinner in town before resting for the next day.
After breakfast at your hotel, you will ride the bus that takes visitors to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Upon entering the site, the full layout of the sanctuary spreads across the mountainside, revealing temples, terraces, and stone precincts.
Your guided experience, lasting 2–3 hours and following Circuit 3B, covers key sectors of the citadel. Your guide will explain the functions and importance of the spaces you visit, offering a clearer understanding of how this site operated during the Inca period.
If you have secured permits in advance, you may also climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for elevated panoramic views.
Back in Aguas Calientes, you will have time for lunch on your own. In the afternoon, you will board the train bound for Ollantaytambo, where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Cusco.
The arrival to the city usually occurs around 6:30 p.m., closing a journey filled with history, scenery, and one of the most iconic trails in South America.
